September is Hunger Action  Month, when the Feeding America network  of more than 200 food banks  unite to urge individuals to take action  in their communities.

Locally, The Manna House Soup  Kitchen is conducting its annual fund  raising effort.

The Manna House is a non-profit  organization and is supported by financial  donations, as well as food donations  collected from food drives.

“Last year, the Manna House  served 65,871 hot meals and its food  pantry assisted 2,192 families,” said  Missy Worthington, vice president of  the Manna House Board of Directors.

“This annual drive is a critical part  of our mission to serve nutritious food  to those who need it –the homeless,  unemployed, working poor, senior citizens  and most importantly, the children,”  Worthington stated. “Everyone  is welcome to come enjoy a meal.”

Breakfast is served from 8:30 to  9:30 a. m. and lunch form 11 a. m. until  noon, Monday thru Friday. The food  pantry is open Mondays, Wednesdays  and Fridays, from 9 to 11 a. m.

Financial donations help with operating  expenses, such as electricity and  equipment. Contributions may be  mailed to: The Manna House, P. O. Box  13541, Florence, S. C. 29504.

Donations of canned goods and  paper products are gladly accepted  Monday thru Friday,  9 a. m until noon. The Manna House  may be contacted at 667-6077 for a  donation pick up.

“As people plan their holiday giving,  the board of directors of the  Manna House asks them to consider  this important program,” Worthington  said. “We have so much to share with  those less fortunate in a very tangible  way by helping us continue to provide  hot meals on a daily basis.”

Hunger Action Day, Sept. 5, kicks  off a month-long effort in support of  hunger-relief. Individuals are asked to  take the SNAP Challenge and live on  just $4.50 a day. Get a sense of what  life is like for those struggling to put  food on the table by shopping for your  meals with the daily average per person  benefit provided by the Supplemental  Nutrition Assistance Program  (formerly known as Food Stamps).

The Manna House is located at 450  Jarrott Street.
