John Russell Stokes

John Russell Stokes, 84 of Savannah Lakes Village, died Tuesday, July 2, at Self Regional Medical Center, in Greenwood. Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at The Lutheran Church by the Lake with Pastor Jim Kinsler officiating. A reception followed in the church social hall. Mr. Stokes, a native of Sumter, served in the U.S. Army Big Red 1 Infantry following WWII in Germany during the Berlin Airlift. In 1954, he graduated from  the University of South Carolina and was a diehard Gamecocks Fan for 59 years. He had lived in Birmingham and Atlanta where he operated a trucking company. Following retirement, he and his wife, Jean moved to Savannah Lakes Village. He attended The Lutheran Church By The Lake. Survivors include his wife, Jean Hannah Stokes; son, John Russell “Rusty” Stokes Jr., York; daughter: Lisa Hannah Stokes, Grayson, Ga.; brother: Dalton Stokes, Columbia; sister: JoAnn Stokes Smith, Charleston and grandchildren: Katie Douglas, Sara Stokes, and Wilder Stokes Also, great-grandchildren: Emma Kate Douglas, Harper Douglas, William Douglas and numerous nieces and nephews Memorial contributions may be made to: Self Regional Foundation, 1325 Spring St., Greenwood, SC 29646 or The Lutheran Church By The Lake, c/o Pastors Fund, 100 12 Oaks Dr., McCormick, SC 29835.
