Robert Alfred Thompson of Lake City, a former publisher of The News Journal, died last week. Along with his wife Adrienne, he owned and operated The Lake City Shopper. Thompson, 67, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, after an extended illness at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. “Robert was very personable and enjoyed his job and the people he worked with. He was a friend to the newspaper industry and will be missed,” commented Don Swartz, publisher/ owner of The News Journal.
Robert was born in Florence County, the son of the late John James Thompson and Edna Baxley Thompson. He was a graduate of Indiantown Schools and of Florence Darlington Technical College. Prior to college Robert was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Panama before returning home to go to college. He served as president of the Lake City Chamber of Commerce and continued to support the town of Lake City until his death. He was a member of Browns Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake City.
Robert was an avid Gamecock fan. In addition to his wife, Adrienne Godwin Thompson of Lake City, he is survived by a son Phillip John Thompson of Lake City; a grandson, Phillip John “P.J.” Thompson of Lake City; a sister, Judith Thompson (Robert) Bishop of Del Rio, TX; two aunts, Audrine Baxley (Tommy) Thomas of Florence and Harriett Baxley of Vox; and two special friends, Wayne Salvador of Lake City and Michael Godwin of Lake City.
