Clemson University scientist Jim Frederick has received a competitive research grant award in the amount of $150,000 from the S.C. Agricultural Experiment Station. The funds will be used to purchase innovative equipment to study the harvesting and processing of crop plant material to use for various purposes ranging from energy to the extraction of genetically enhanced traits. The equipment will be shared by a number of scientists from across the state for both research and educational purposes. Frederick and over 40 scientists from different agencies and industries in South Carolina are collaborating on projects to discover ways to better utilize agronomic and forest products. Frederick notes research that improves agricultural and forestry markets will enhance the profitability and environmental sustainability of the state’s top industry. The equipment will also be utilized as part of the Center’s Pee Dee Public Education Program aimed at improving k-12 science and technology education in the region’s local school districts.
