Patriots remembered

A patriotic ceremony was held Saturday afternoon at the Florence Veterans Park as part of the Sheriff’s Office Benefit Ride. Military and first responders were honored during a short ceremony which included the laying of a wreath at the 911 monument. The motorcycle ride began in the infield of Darlington Raceway and ended at Creek Ratz after the “in between” stop at the Veterans Park. Retired Army Col. Barry Wingard led the ceremony, remembering the 2,996 people killed on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center towers, The Pentagon and Shanksville, PA., as well as the 4,488 American troops who died in the Iraq war, 2,266 who died in Afghanistan and the 51,221 soldiers who were injured in these conflicts.
