Lyle Lovett coming to the PAC Aug. 30, tickets on sale now

Lyle Lovett’s coming to Florence.

And he’s bringing his Large Band with him.

The legendary singer, song writer, storyteller, actor and American music icon will be at Francis Marion University’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Tickets for the one-of-a-kind show go on sale Wednesday, June 11 at noon. Ticket prices start at $69.

Lovett’s appearance continues the performing arts center’s recent string of big-name acts. Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt have all played the PAC in recent months, and the Indigo Girls will be in the building, accompanied by the Florence Symphony Orchestra, on June 20. Tickets for that show are still on sale.

And then, at the end of August, there will be Lyle Lovett.

Lovett’s career is almost too big and too diverse to fully describe. During a career spanning more than three decades he has churned out hit songs and best-selling albums that cross an array of musical boundaries. His 14 albums include the Grammy Award-winning “It’s Not Big, It’s Large,” and most recently, “Release Me.”

Lovett has won four Grammy Awards and was honored as Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award. He was recently named the Texas State Musician. For a state that’s not small, nor short on musicians, that’s a considerable honor.

Lovett’s many-hued, multi-faceted career extends far beyond the musical stage. He’s appeared in a half dozen feature movies, including Robert Altman’s The Player and Short Cuts; has made guest appearances on several TV shows (he currently has a regular role in FX’s The Bridge); has written for TV and composed movie scores. Lovett met his former wife, Julia Roberts, during a movie shoot.

But it’s music, and especially live performances, where Lovett is most at home.  The Texas native’s music is an eclectic mix of swing, bluegrass, folk, country, rock and soul,  that defies convention and breaks down barriers. His shows are a fascinating journey of song, storytelling and pure entertainment that leave crowds gasping for more.

The Las Vegas Journal-Review recently wrote of a Lovett concert, “When it comes to investing the concert dollar, you can’t argue with Lyle Lovett giving you straight up what you came for. … It’s not like you hear his songs anywhere else and they stand outside of time.”

For his Florence show, Lovett will be on stage with his “Large Band,” a group of musicians and singers who manage to live up to the band’s name. More than a dozen performers will be on stage with Lovett. The show, which regularly runs more than two hours, is unlike any in the entertainment world today and will be an absolutely first-of-its-kind in Florence.

Tickets are available online and at the PAC box office beginning at noon, on Wednesday, June 11. Buy tickets online at Call the box office at 843-661-4444 during regular business hours, or come by and make purchases in person. The box office is located in the performing arts center lobby at 201 S. Dargan Street in downtown Florence. It’s open Monday and Wednesday from noon til 6 p.m., and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon until 5 p.m.

The Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center opened in 2011. The 61,000 square foot building is operated by the university as both a performance venue and an academic building utilized by FMU’s Music Industry program.
