The Clay Pot Coffee Shop announces the second anniversary of the “Top Of The Pot” Singer/Songwriters Competition. This competition is designed specifically for amateur musicians who have written their own lyrics and or music. Once again Florence’s local recording studio Southern Harmony is offering a recording package to the first place winner with a cash prize of $300 from The Clay Pot. Second place is $75, third is a $50 gift card, compliments of First Reliance Bank, fourth and fifth place prizes are $25 gift certificates, courtesy of Musical Depot. And new this year there will be a People’s Choice award of $25, compliments of Speak Easy Band. Competition registration is underway.
Artists must submit a full copy of the lyrics for the entry song with a $15 registration fee. Copies of the registration form and competition rules can be downloaded from Clay Pot’s Facebook page or picked up at the Coffee Shop at 166 South Dargan Street, or at Southern Harmony Recording Studio, 1340 Celebration Blvd., Unit B (843-992-9011 contact Ken Jones for available hours) or Musical Depot 906 S. Cashua Dr. Contestant registration deadline is Saturday July 19, at 8 p.m. The competition rounds will be held in the Clay Pot Café from 7 to 9 p.m., on the following dates: July 26, Aug. 8, Aug. 16, Aug. 23, and Sept. 6. Songs will be judged on basis of lyrics, originality of content, melody quality, and uniqueness of presentation, audience response and general overall impressions.
Each artist will compete in one round with the top five overall performers competing on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 4 to 10 p.m. in the William H. Johnson Courtyard. All singer/songwriter contestants are invited and encouraged to play at the finale. Peggy Brown, owner of the Clay Pot says “Over the past two years we have had some great singer/songwriter talent in the Clay Pot from the Pee Dee area. It is very important to the performing artists to be recognized for their talents they so often share with the community.” Florence’s First Lady Laura Wukela. who served as one of the finalist judges in 2013, said “The Clay Pot Coffee Shop is a remarkable center for the arts in downtown Florence encouraging, supporting, displaying, and promoting the works of a wide variety of artists.
The “Top of the Pot” Singer Songwriter contest provides a unique opportunity for showcasing and rewarding the talented musicians in the Pee Dee area while entertaining the community.” Ginger Winn, last year’s 14 year-old “Top of the Pot” winner said “The Top of the Pot songwriting contest is great for local songwriters. Winning has really catapulted me into the fast lane of songwriting. I’ve written three records since then and have a “Best of Record” too.
