The American Legion Fred H. Sexton Post 1 in Florence recognizes their post historian, Shirley Sebastian. As post historian, her duties involve monitoring and documenting Legion related events to be passed on to posterity for the post. This requires following the media coverage of events, getting photographs, minutes of meetings and other post project activities. A Vietnam Navy veteran, Sebastian served as a hospital corpsman for three years. She saw duty at the Great Lakes in Bainbridge, MD and St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York.
After serving in the Navy, she worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the Massachusetts Soldiers Home. In 1989, Sebastian worked at the Marion Memorial Hospital and Methodist Manor until her retirement. After moving to Florence, she joined the American Legion. She immediately put her scrapbooking skills to work by becoming the post historian at Post 1. In addition to her Legion work, she does scrapbooking for the Florence Little Theatre and the Make a Wish Foundation. Shirley’s creativity and attention to detail help provide lasting memories for those that she serves, commented Ken Curran, Post Adjutant and PR Officer.
