Florence-Darlington Technical College’s leaders welcomed Progress Energy officials recently for a check presentation to the College’s Pipe Welding Academy, which will provide scholarships to students bound for careers in the energy industry.
Progress Energy Southern Region General Manager Melody Birmingham presented a grant of $40,000 to FDTC President Dr. Charles Gould, Advanced Welding and Cutting Director Ross Gandy and FDTC Educational Foundation Executive Director Jill Heiden during a brief ceremony.
The Pipe Welding Academy and the newly created Power Up program at FDTC and Northeastern Technical College are training students in the high paying careers of pipe welding and pipe fitting needed by the energy industry.
“Progress Energy is proud to partner with Florence-Darlington Tech as we work together to provide scholarships for the next generation of energy workers,” Birmingham said.
The grant provides scholarships for 14 students at the Pipe Welding Academy. According to Welding Director Gandy, $25,000 will help fund scholarships for pipe welding students and $15,000 will go to pipefitting students. This is the third time Progress Energy has helped fund FDTC’s Power Up program.
