Christmas may change but the message does not
Brenda Harrison
Editor

As we all know, Christmas has changed a lot from the celebrations in our past. Consider what Christmas was like 100 years ago. In 1913, the top gifts for children were simple: candy, nuts, a rocking horse, dolls, mittens or gloves, a toy train, oranges, books, handkerchiefs and ice skates. Today the top toy choices include the Furby Boom, Teksta Robotic Puppy, the LeapPad Ultra, The Flying Fairy, Big Hugs Elmo, Barbie Dream House, Giggly Monkey, Nerf Gun, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Legos. The top Christmas movies from 100 years ago were short silent films and included: “A Christmas Carol” from 1910 (made by Thomas Edison); “The Adventures of the Wrong Santa Claus” from 1914; “The Little Girl Who Did Not Believe in Santa Claus,” from 1907; and “The Night Before Christmas” released in 1905. The top Christmas movies in the last 10 years include: “Elf” 2003; Polar Express, 2004; “The Family Stone,”2005, “A Christmas Story,” 2005 and “A Christmas Carol,” 2009. The Christmas menu from 1913 might feature cream of celery soup, oysters, roast turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, peas, cranberries, lettuce salad with mayonnaise, plum pudding, wafers, cheese, mince pie, ice cream, fruit cake, candy, nuts, raisins and coffee. Though the times have changed the message remains the same: God made Christmas happen Friends make Christmas beautiful Music makes Christmas festive Giving makes Christmas joyous Love makes Christmas complete! (author unknown) Merry Christmas to you and yours and, as Charles Dickens’ Tiny Tim said so many Christmases ago, God Bless us everyone!
