American Legion Post 1 hosts Civic Awards Banquet

The Fred H. Sexton American Legion Post 1 held its annual Civic Awards Banquet on April 8. Post Commander Charles Bethea welcomed the award nominees, friends and families and invited guests. A catered buffet was served prior to the ceremonies. The post recognized the following people for their outstanding contributions to the community and their organizations: Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer – Corporal John Powell, Florence Police Dept. Outstanding Traffic Safety Officer – Corporal Brian Barley, Florence Police Dept. Outstanding Firemen of the Year – Captain Mike Poston, Captain Chuck Rogers, Firefighter Mark Reynolds and Firefighter Larry Jackson. School Teacher of the Year – Dr. Lucia Huang of Wilson High School. Legionnaire of the Year – Ken Curran, Post 1 Adjutant A Certificate of Distinction was awarded to Victoria Nwankudo of Wilson High School for her outstanding performance in the Legion’s Oratorical Competition. Victoria won the local competition and the quadrant (area) competition and went on to the state competition where she finished third. She is a junior and is looking forward to competing again next year. The ultimate winner of the national competition can win over $20,000 in scholarship money.
