FITZHUGH BETHEA Outstanding Statesman

The King’s Academy Middle School and Upper School recently attended the YMCA Youth in Government Conference in Columbia. Gina Llaneza, the TKA Youth in Government advisor, says that the conference is an excellent opportunity for students to think critically and exercise their voices through the legislation and judicial systems. She was assisted by Brad Turner. Local attorney Todd Tucker and Solicitor Ed Clements served as advisors to the TKA team. Participating students included Lizzie Jackson, William Outlaw, Annika Grebe, Ryan Towler, Ben Clements, Jackson Smith, Kelsey Norris, Zach Sidden, Drew Brown, Kenneth Peters, Maggie Criswell, Hannah Myrick, Kellen Lott, Caitlin Cameron, Eliza Wilhoit, Chanie Asger, Jacob Parnell, Eduardo Diaz, Jake Lyles and Harold Boatwright.

The team earned Premier Delegation, their court cases presented at the conference and had two bills pass through the Committee and Senate to the House (Jacob Parnell and Eduardo Diaz, Harold Boatwright and Jake Lyles). Sophomore Kelsey Norris earned the Outstanding Attorney award. This is the first year that the Middle School has participated in the conference. The team included Mason Matthews, Fitzhugh Bethea, Fallon Frierson, Stephen Colones, Jackson Moya-Mendez and Andrew Alexander. They earned Premier Delegation and had two bills signed into law. Fitzhugh Bethea, a TKA 7th grader, was awarded Outstanding Statesman.
