At a special called meeting on June 24, the Florence One Board of Trustees approved the appointment of two new principals. Tara B. Newton has been named principal of Briggs Elementary. She will replace Martin Schmid who retired at the end of this school year. Previously, Newton served as curriculum coordinator at John W. Moore, a position she has held since 2006. She began her career in education as a teacher at Marion Intermediate School in the year 2000. She also served as a teacher at Moore from 2004-2006. Newton received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Master of Education Degree in Instructional Accommodations from Francis Marion University. Newton also received an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina where she is also pursuing a Doctorate in Education Leadership.

Hayley Cagle who serves as curriculum coordinator at Dewey Carter, has been named Principal of Sneed Middle School. She will replace Tony Lunsford who retired at the end of this school year. She has served as curriculum coordinator at Dewey Carter since 2011. Her teaching career began in 1992 at C.A. Taylor Elementary in Cayce. In 2006 she became a first grade teacher at Briggs Elementary. She later served at Carver Elementary as a curriculum coach specializing in science, and she served as a teacher in Florence One’s gifted and talented program (REACH) from 2009 until 2011. She holds a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Grand Canyon University; a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Campbell University, and a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education from the University of South Carolina.

At its meeting on June 12, the school board accepted the recommendation to name West Florence High School Football Coach Trey Woodberry the new athletic director. Woodberry has served at West Florence High School for the past 10 years since 2004. He shall maintain his coaching duties and continue to serve both as head football coach as well as athletic director at West Florence. Since the death of former Athletic Director Neville Files this year, Woodberry has been serving as interim athletic director.
