FMU Patriot women announce hoop additions

Francis Marion University women’s basketball head coach Kate Glusko has announced the addition of three transfers for the 2013-14 season: 5-9 forward Alexia Bell of Orange Park, Fla., 5-10 shooting guard Chelsea Dukes of Baltimore, Md., and 5-8 guard Cy’erra Mills of Burnsville, Minn. All three will have two years of eligibility for the Patriots. Bell is a transfer from Florida State College in Jacksonville, Fla. This past season, she averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and helping lead the Blue Wave to a 23-8 record and the Mid-Florida Conference title with an 11-1 mark. She was selected to the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the season. As a freshman in 2011-12, she averaged 4.3 ppg and 3.8 rpg, while connecting on 52.1 percent of her field goal attempts. Bell attended Fleming Island and Wayne County high schools. “Alexia brings much needed size and physicality to our inside game,” said Glusko. “She is a tremendous rebounder and excellent defender and will make an immediate impact in our post play. We are extremely excited to have her join our program.” Dukes will come to FMU from NCAA Division I Delaware State University. As a freshman, she tallied 6.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per game and earned MEAC All-Rookie Team recognition. She finished 12th in the conference in three-point shooting at 30.0 percent. This past year, she averaged 3.1 points in 18 contests, including seven starts Dukes is a product of St. Frances Academy, where she helped her team to the IAAM championship in 2010 and was an honor roll student. She also attended Towson Catholic High School where she garnered Baltimore All-County Team honors. “Chelsea will provide great length at our wing position,” Glusko commented. “She is a great fit for our program with her ability to shoot the three and run the floor. Chelsea also brings veteran experience needed to compete in the Peach Belt Conference.” Mills is a transfer from Division I University of North Dakota. In 27 games this past year, she averaged 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. As a freshman, she played in 23 games and tallied 1.7 ppg and 0.9 rpg for a 21-11 squad that earned a bid to the post-season Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. She is a graduate of Osseo High School, where as a senior she averaged 7.0 ppg and helped the Orioles to the Northwest Suburban Conference championship. She was an honorable mention All-State selection and was named to play in the 2011 Inner-City All-Star Game. She also attended Minneapolis North High School where she helped lead the Polars to a state runner-up finish. “In order to be successful in the Peach Belt we must have strong point guard play and we feel the addition of Cy'erra meets that need. She is a tenacious defender, with great basketball IQ and a strong enthusiasm for the game. She also provides us length at the point guard spot.” Francis Marion lost four seniors off last season’s 13-13 squad. Glusko previously announced the signing of 5-11 high school senior forward Deana Turner of Riverdale, Ga., during the fall 2012 early signing period.
