Patriots dash past GRU Augusta 52-45 to open New Year

AUGUSTA, GA – Sophomore guard Camille Dash started and finished a 16-3 run early in the first half that help enabled Francis Marion University to capture a 52-45 road win over GRU Augusta, Thursday evening (Jan. 2) in Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the PBC with its third straight victory and fourth consecutive road win.

The Patriots will return home to face Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  FMU will be hosting FYBL Tip-Off Day with all Florence Youth Basketball League players who wear their jerseys admitted free of charge as well as two guests admitted free.

Junior guard Briana Robinson led FMU with 14 points and three steals, while senior forward Dee Gray notched her third double-double of the young season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.  Dash finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Becky Newhouse paced GRU Augusta (6-4, 2-1) with nine points and nine rebounds. Dash snapped a 7-7 deadlock with a layup and then concluded the 16-3 spurt with a three-pointer as the Patriots took a 23-10 advantage with five minutes left in the opening half.  Francis Marion led 25-17 at intermission as the Patriots held the Jaguars to 17.9 percent shooting (5-of-28) over the opening 20 minutes.

GRU Augusta trimmed the margin to 29-25 early in the second half, but the Patriots responded with a pair of baskets to push the lead back to eight points.  A bucket by junior guard Cy’erra Mills extended the advantage to double digits at 41-30.  The Patriots’ largest lead of the second stanza came at 46-34 after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Lauren Woods with 5:46 remaining.

The Jaguars scored 10 of the game’s next 12 points to pull within 48-44 with just over a minute left.  A pair of free throws by both Gray and Robinson would seal the victory for FMU.

Francis Marion shot 33.3 percent for the game, including 5-of-12 from three-point range, and was 11-of-16 at the foul line.  GRU Augusta finished at 28.3 percent from the field, including 3-of-17 from beyond the arc, and was 8-of-14 at the charity stripe.
