Lenns refocuses for three-RBI day in FMU win

FLORENCE, SC – Junior right fielder Zac Lenns collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lift Francis Marion University to a 6-4 victory over Mars Hill College, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 2) on the second day of the 2014 Carolinas Hospital System Baseball Classic.

The Patriots improve to 2-0 and will return to the field later Sunday to face Pfeiffer University at 6 p.m. in the classic’s final contest.

In addition to Lenns, senior center fielder Isaac Davenport and sophomore second baseman Cole Morris both had two hits.  Davenport drove in a pair of runs with a seventh-inning single through a drawn-in infield.

Sophomore southpaw Daniel Barfield (1-0) picked up the win in his second career start.  He tossed five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and fanning four. Senior righty Jeffrey Stoner, the second of two Patriot relievers, picked up the save as he pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Stoner stranded the tying runs on base in the ninth as he induced an infield grounder up the middle that was snagged by Morris and tossed to shortstop Michael Wilson for the game-ending force-out at second base.

Mars Hill left-hander Andy Runion (0-1) allowed two runs in three innings and was tagged with the loss.

Francis Marion scored twice in the top of the third frame on a bases-loaded walk to Marquis Curry and an RBI fielder’s choice grounder by Lenns.

After the Lions (0-3) crept to within 2-1 in the sixth, the Patriots answered with four tallies in the top of the seventh. Both Davenport and Lenns stroked two-run singles.

Mars Hill scored three times in the seventh, and had runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not complete the comeback.

Shortstop Evan Rogers and outfielder Phillip Carroll led Mars Hill with three hits apiece.
