GREENVILLE, SC – Junior John Michael Schaffer shot a two-under-par 70 to pace Francis Marion University over the final round as the Patriots finished tied for 17th at the Furman University Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, Sunday afternoon (March 30) in Greenville.
The tournament was contested on the 6,994-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course.
Francis Marion posted a 307 team score on Sunday and finished tied with Jacksonville University. Both squads tallied 54-hole scores of 910.
Georgia State University and 10h-ranked Virginia Tech shared the team title as both teams carded 287 scores over the final round. The two squads entered Sunday’s play tied and finished with nine-under 855 tournament totals. Kennesaw State University, ranked 36th, placed third at 862, followed by the University of Akron (875) and Elon University (881).
Schaffer’s final round moved him up to a tie for 26th place at 222. Sophomore Tobias Pettersen shot a final-round 78 and tied for 65th position at 228. Senior Taylor Banks also shot 78 and tied for 77th position with a 230 scorecard, while junior Austin Frick shot 81 and junior Lukas Crisp an 83 and both tied for 90th with 234 tournament totals.
Freshman YongLiang Shao (75-81-83=239) and sophomore John Lurie Pate (76-88-87=251) both competed as individuals and finished in 102nd and 111th positions respectively.
Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech led from wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors. His final-round 70 gave him a one-stroke victory with an 11-under-par 205 total.
The Patriots will return to action on April 14-15 when they participate in the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational Tournament in Spartanburg.
