Francis Marion University men’s tennis coach Garth Thomson has announced the signing of Dion Nijboer of Dronten, Netherlands, to a national letter of intent to attend FMU and play for the Patriots beginning this fall. Nijboer, 6-5, is a product of the Centre for Sports and Education in Zwolle.
During his junior career in the Netherlands he played all the national tournaments, and reached a top 20 position in the national rankings. He currently holds an open Dutch national singles ranking of 200 and in doubles is ranked 217th. In addition, he has won several open tournaments in singles and doubles.
“Dion is an aggressive player who is also left-handed, something our squad needed,” Thomson said. “He is a big guy and has recorded good results playing in the Netherlands. I like the way he plays and I expect him to step in and play toward the top end of our lineup.”
Francis Marion lost only one senior off last year’s squad that ranked No.31 in the final ITA national poll despite a 7-9 overall record. The Patriots have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 17 of the past 20 seasons.
