Williamson Park to hold 10th annual Darlington 5000 race on Saturday
Darlington’s 70-acre nature preserve prepares for the 10th annual Darlington 5000 race on Saturday. The USATF-certified course will take walkers and runners 5 kilometers (or 5,000 meters) through Williamson Park, across Swift Creek and along park trails, starting in downtown Darlington at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. The race starts at the Public Square with registration beginning at 8 a.m.

Ricke helps lead FMU past Catawba 2-0
SALISBURY, NC – Junior midfielder Sven Ricke scored one goal and assisted on another to help lift Francis Marion University to a 2-0 blanking of Catawba College, Saturday night (Sept. 6) in the final match of the Indian’s 2014 Men’s Soccer Tournament. Francis Marion (2-0-0) opens its season with back-to-back wins for the first time in six years. The Patriots will play at Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. FMU’s home opener will be Sept. 13 against Flagler College at 7 p.m.

Florence County Gamecock Club

USTA championships expected to bring 1,500 tennis players here
Nearly 1,500 tennis players will come to Florence next weekend for the USTA South Carolina Mixed Doubles State League Championships. The players will enjoy co-ed doubles tennis and get to experience the City of Florence’s many restaurants and hotels. “We’re just looking forward to having all the people in Florence, showing them what Florence has to offer,” said Ed Sprenger, local league coordinator of the Florence Tennis Association. “(The mixed championship) just fits really, really well for our community.” This is the third consecutive year a USTA mixed state league championship has been in Florence.

YMCA Golf Classic

Florence Family YMCA 6th Annual Golf Classic will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 at Crossings Golf Club. It will be a four man captain’s choice tournament with a noon tee time. The cost is $200 per team and includes lunch. Lunch will be available at 11 a.m. 50/50 Putting Contest – $5 at the turn. A mulligan package is available for $80 per team that includes: 8 mulligans, four red tees and four strings. All proceeds benefit the annual campaign that keeps the YMCA available for kids and families that need us most.

FSA's Strikers take win at Aiken Cup

The Florence Soccer Association’s U17 girls team, the Strikers, were the champions of the 19th Annual Aiken Cup held Aug. 23-24 on the polo fields in Aiken. The Strikers went undefeated during the weekend event and allowed only one goal in four matches. They are the first FSA girls team to win the Aiken Cup. FSA also had four other teams that were finalists: U9 boys (FSA Fear), U12 boys (FSA Inferno), U15 girls (FSA Heat) and U18 boys (FSA Fusion).

Patriot Men's Soccer opens against Newberry

The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will open its third season under head coach John Campbell when the Patriots travel to Salisbury, N.C., on Thursday (Sept. 4) to face Newberry College at 5 p.m. in the opening match of the Catawba College Tournament. Also on Thursday, Catawba will face Lees-McRae College at 7:30 p.m. at the newly renovated Frock Soccer Complex.  To conclude its weekend play, FMU will face the host Indians on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

FMU men's soccer picked fifth in PBC poll

Coming off a trip to the conference title match and a five-win improvement, the Francis Marion University men’s soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in the annual Peach Belt Conference coaches’ pre-season poll. Young Harris College has been selected as the preseason favorites. The Mountain Lions received eight of a possible nine first-place votes to finish with 78 total points, edging out second-place Lander University by seven votes.  Flagler College was third in the voting, followed by Clayton State University, FMU, the University of Montevallo and UNC Pembroke tied for sixth, University of North Georgia, USC Aiken, and Georgia Southwestern State University.  The Patriots did receive one second-place vote in a poll where coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

FMU Women entertain Pirates on Labor Day

The Francis Marion University women’s soccer team will hold Campers’ Night on Monday (Sept. 1) when the Patriots play host to East Carolina University at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.  All participants in the FMU summer soccer camps, along with their parents, will be admitted into the complex free. General admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID).  The games will be streamed live online at http://www.ustream.tv/fmupatriots and shown locally on Time Warner Cable channel 11, courtesy of the Patriot Sports Network.

Patriots blanked by Pirates in women's soccer action
East Carolina University scored five second-half goals to pull away from Francis Marion University for a 6-0 non-conference win on Monday night (Sept. 1) in women’s soccer action. The start of the match was delayed for an hour and 35 minutes due to lightning. Francis Marion drops to 0-3-0, while East Carolina (3-1-0) earned its third straight road victory.  FMU will play host to East Tennessee State University on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Patriots drop road match at Kentucky 5-0
Francis Marion University put up a valiant effort, including a 13-save performance by junior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry, but the Patriots fell to SEC power Kentucky 5-0, Friday evening (Aug. 29) in non-conference women’s college soccer action. Francis Marion drops to 0-2-0, while the Wildcats improve to 2-1-0.  Kentucky was opening its new Bell Soccer Complex and drew a home-opener crowd of 1,047.

FMU men's basketball announces newcomers

Francis Marion University men’s basketball head coach Gary Edwards has announced four additions to his squad for the 2014-15 campaign: freshman 6-6 forward Judah Alexander of Mount Vernon, N.Y., junior 6-4 forward Paul Finn of Richmond, Va., freshman 6-3 wing player A.J. Jackson of Fort Mill, S.C., and junior 6-5 forward David Jerome of Kissimmee, Fla. Alexander is a graduate of Mount Vernon High School, where he played for legendary head coach Robert Cimmino.  Alexander helped lead the Knights to a 22-1 record this past season and the NYS Class AA state championship.  He earned All-Conference, All-Section, and All-League honors while also being selected to play in the LHBC All-Star Game.

Patriots face SEC Wildcats on Friday night

The Francis Marion University women’s soccer program will travel to Lexington, Ky., to face SEC power Kentucky on Friday evening (Aug. 29).  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and will serve as the first match to be played at the new 1,500-seat Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. The match will be carried live on the SEC Network+, WatchESPN, and the WatchESPN app. Francis Marion is 0-1 after losing its season opener 2-1 to Georgia Southern University on an 88th minute goal.  The Wildcats, who received votes in the pre-season NSCAA Top 25 poll, are 1-1 after splitting two matches last weekend in Washington state.  Kentucky lost to the University of Washington 4-1 and then claimed a 2-1 overtime victory over Seattle University.

FMU volleyball tabbed for third in PBC poll

Coming off a 21-win season, the Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish third in the annual Peach Belt Conference coaches’ pre-season poll. Head coach Paul MacDonald returns seven letterwinners from last year’s 21-9 squad that finished third in the PBC regular season with a 12-6, the team’s highest PBC win total since 1998. The 20-win campaign was the first for the Patriots since 2008 and the 17th in team history. Armstrong State University, winners of three straight Peach Belt regular-season championships and two straight tournament titles, was the unanimous pick to repeat as champions in the poll released today.

Florence Gymnasts finish season at AAU Nationals
Gymnasts from Freedom Florence traveled to Walt Disney World, FL to compete in the AAU Gymnastics National Championship, June 12-15. What better way to finish up their gymnastics meet season than competing at Walt Disney World’s Wild World of Sports. The girls had the time of their lives as well as bringing home a number of medals, said their coach. Bronze Level: Emery McCutcheon finished sixth (9.5) on vault, fourth (9.250) on bars, fifth (9.350) on beam, first (9.325) on floor and fourth All Around with a score of 37.425. Makayla Lawrence finished fourth (9.550) on vault, third (9.0) on bars, third (8.9) on beam, fifth (9.075) on floor and third All Around with a score of 36.525.

Jessica Scales scored on a short flick shot with 2:10 left in regulation to give Georgia Southern University a 2-1 season-opening win over Francis Marion University, Friday night (Aug. 22) in women’s college soccer action. Francis Marion (0-1-0) will return to action on Friday night (Aug. 29) when the Patriots travel to play SEC power Kentucky.  Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. on the SEC Digital Network.

FMU midfielder earns pre-season honor

Francis Marion University junior midfielder Pascal Magiera has been named to the Peach Belt Conference’s 2014 Pre-Season All-Conference Men’s Soccer Team announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 20). Magiera started all 19 matches a year ago and was second on the team in minutes played.  He registered three assists and earned both All-Conference and All-Academic team recognition for 2013. Named the Patriots’ team captain for 2014, Magiera will lead a squad of eight returnees and 12 newcomers into the new campaign which begins on Sept. 4 against Newberry College at the Catawba College Tournament.  The team’s home opener will be Sept. 13 against PBC foe Flagler College.

Francis Marion finished the 2013 season with a 10-5-4 record and an appeared in the Peach Belt Tournament championship match.  During the season, FMU defeated two nationally ranked teams, including the nation's No.1 squad – a program first.

Patriot Golf inks two freshmen

Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced the signing of Alessandro Caselli of Vimercate, Italy, and Marc Casullo of Aurora, Ontario, Canada, to national letters of intent to attend FMU and play for the Patriots beginning this fall. Caselli, 5-9, is a product of Liceo Banfi and Collegio Villoresi San Giuseppe, where he played under the direction of coach Roberto Zappa. A four-year letterman, he placed third at a pair of tournaments during last season.  He owns a 1.4 handicap, a driving distance of approximately 280 yards, and a 7-iron distance of 174 yards.

Florence County Gamecock Club plans luncheon with Tony Morrell

The Florence County Gamecock Club will be hosting their Fall Gamecock Luncheon with Tony Morrell of Big Spur/247 Sports on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Conference Center on the grounds of Carolinas Hospital System at 805 Pamplico Hwy. in Florence. Tony will bring his unique and up to date report on the upcoming football season. The luncheon will begin at noon and the admission at the door is $20, check or cash. The meal will be furnished by Roger’s BBQ House. The public is invited to attend. Proceeds from the 7th Annual “William Rhea Memorial Golf Tournament” will be presented to the Gamecock Club for Williams-Bryce football stadium additions and the USC Cheerleading Program. Local team wins USSSA Global World Series

The 8U Palmetto Diamondbacks won the USSSA Global World Series held in Spartanburg, July 31-Aug. 3. The team played nine games in four days with an overall record of 7-1-1. They scored 86 runs total and allowed 35 runs. The team was also well represented in the skills evaluation. Jack Seward hit six home runs and finished first in the Home Run Derby, while Christopher Matthews hit four home runs and finished second. Ian Harris of Sumter, finished first in the Base Running Competition and Chandler Thompson finished third in the Accuracy Throw Competition. Christopher Matthews, Jack Seward, Noah Moore, Nicholas Fore and Noah Pit finished second in the Around the Horn Competition.

City youth softball registration

The City of Florence Recreation Department is registering for the Florence Youth Softball Association Fall Program through Friday, Aug. 29. The registration fee is $40, which includes their insurance, jersey, and socks. The fee is only $35 for those who have participated in a City of Florence athletics program in 2014. Age groups are: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-18. Playing age is based on the age of player as of Dec. 31, 2014. A parent or guardian can register at the City of Florence Recreation Administrative Offices located at 513 Barnes Street between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. A birth certificate is required at the time of signup for anyone that has not played a sport with the City of Florence. FCS to host football jamboree

Florence Christian School will host a six-team varsity football jamboree, Friday, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m. on the Eagles home field. The games will consist of two regulation quarters. Gate admission will be $5, kids 6 and under will be free. Concessions will be available. Patriots earn pre-season women's soccer recognition
Seven members of the Francis Marion University women’s soccer team have been named to the 2014 pre-season Independent All-Conference Team as selected by College Sports Madness.  Heading the FMU honorees is senior forward Chanel Harris, who was named the pre-season Offensive Player of the Year for Division I independent programs. Francis Marion opens its 2014 campaign on Friday, Aug. 22, with a home match against Georgia Southern University at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field. The Patriots will play eight home matches and nine road matches, including three tournaments.  FMU will face national power University of Kentucky on Aug. 29 in Lexington, Ky.
