Shofar group to host 'Surfside Sounding' on Tuesday evening

MYRTLE BEACH – Shalom. A brand new Shofar interest group, T’Kiyah Sounders of Myrtle Beach, will usher in the 2013 International Day of Shofar Study with an open “Surfside Sounding” on Tuesday evening, Aug. 6, 7:30-8:30 p.m. It will be held on the public-access beach next to the Springmaid Conference Center on the southern end of Myrtle Beach across from the airport. The time-frame brackets sunset (8:08 p.m.), which on the Hebrew calendar begins the next day, in this case the month of Elul (the last of 12 months on the Hebrew Civil Calendar), a month for retrospection on state of your life during the past year, and get things right with God and neighbors. The group invites all interested parties to join as they practice and teach the four basic sounds of the Shofar: (bring a shofar or just listen and learn). There are several hundred shofars in the greater Myrtle Beach area, many sitting on shelves because owners don’t know how to make them sound at all, or sound properly, or at appropriate times, etc. Many more people are intrigued by this shofar-thing, have seen or heard one, but need encouragement to enter in this form of worship. 1) T’Kiyah: “Taahh”, rather longish 1-breath note, best known shofar sound. Incisive, soul-piercing, “Wake Up!, Start! God is here!” (our namesake). 2) Shevarim: “Taahh-ooh...taahh-ooh...taahh-ooh” 2-notes 3 x in a row. Plaintive, mournful, “Repentance”, outward from human heart to God. 3) Teruah: “Taht...Taht!...” Very quick & direct, 9 sharp blasts of same note. “Alarm! Alert! “Action is urgent!” (In Fall is whole day, Yom Teruah). 4) T’Kiyah Godolah:  “Taaaaaaaahhhh..”, super-prolonged 1-breath, unbroken. “Final appeal”. Sound fades at end of breath.(at Mt Sinai, got louder!). Y’all come on down to the Surfside Sounding! For more information, contact Steven C. Smith at
