PAC adds Community Series to season

Gospel choirs, a military band and the Florence Men’s Choral Society are all part of the latest addition to the Francis Marion University’s Performing Arts Center 2013-14 season schedule. The PAC’s new “Community Concert Series” is a succession of Sunday afternoon concerts built around affordability. Tickets for each show are only $5, with the exception of an April 27 appearance by the 282nd Army Band from Ft. Jackson. There is no admission charge for that concert, per U.S. Army regulations. “While we already offer great value, we recognize that quality entertainment can be expensive and tickets a challenge for some,” said Laura Sims, director of the FMU PAC. “The Performing Arts Center is accessible to all, and the Community Series is a way to make sure that’s true.” The series features five shows with a unique South Carolina flavor and kicks off on Nov. 3 when the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s renowned Spiritual Ensemble comes to town. The Florence Men’s Choral Society will put a special Christmas program on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The New Year will feature performances by lyric baritone Robert Sims, who uses his dynamic voice to tell the history of the American spiritual through song and multimedia. A favorite at the 2013 Arts International event, Sims will be at the PAC on Jan. 26. March 2 is a very special day as Bishop Michael Blue brings “The Tribe” to the PAC. Blue, an FMU alum, is a long-time musical director of church, community and academic choirs in Marion and Florence counties. His “Tribe” is a 60-member alumni choir that gathers several times each year to sing their favorite music with a gospel-style flair. The series concludes on April 27 with the concert by the military musicians from Ft. Jackson, which will feature an array of patriotic music. All the Sunday events will be held at 3 p.m. The Choral Society Christmas Concert on Dec. 20 is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale roughly a month prior to each event and will be sold only at the PAC box office.

All tickets will be general admission with first-come, first-serve seating. Community Series (all events at 3 p.m. except as noted) • Nov.  3 – CSO Spiritual Ensemble. Tickets go on sale Oct. 3 • Dec. 20 (7:30 p.m.) – Florence Men’s Choral Society. Tickets on sale Nov. 20 • Jan. 26 – Baritone and spiritual historian Robert Sims.
