Newsom responds brutally after Speaker Johnson blames California policies for out-of-hand immigration

The issue of immigration is becoming increasingly significant to a broader segment of Americans, even those not directly affected by it. As Texas and California enhance their border security efforts, illegal immigration has emerged as a primary topic of discussion for presidential candidates Biden and Trump, who secured their party’s nominations this week following victories in several state primaries.

Biden admin under pressure

The Biden administration has faced criticism from Republicans for allegedly failing to adequately secure the border since Biden took over the White House office. Recent surveys indicate that a growing number of Democrats share this view too, as prominent individuals, including Elon Musk, have publicly criticized the federal government for the surge in migrants. In December, the U.S. recorded its highest ever number of migrants, highlighting the urgent need for a response from the White House.

The border bill failure

The Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, a $118 billion bill aimed at bolstering U.S. border security through additional fencing, increased detention capacity, and more staff for ICE and the Border Patrol, was blocked in the Senate. The bill encountered significant opposition, notably from former President Donald Trump and key Republicans, contributing to its narrow defeat in a critical Senate vote of 49-50. Millions believe that the bill would have provided the much-needed assistance to properly securing the border.

Johnson and Newsom attack each other

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom were in the spotlight earlier this week when they both decided to exchange comments related to illegal immigration on X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter. Their conversation caught the attention of thousands of online users and sparked a debate following accusations about who was to blame for illegal immigration and drug smuggling at the border.

Newsom first attacked the Republicans

Newsom initiated the discussions by stating that House Republicans have not taken any actions to combat drug smuggling at the border, despite their assertions of a “crisis.”

“As @GOP screams “BORDER CRISIS!” … Here’s what they are doing to help: NOTHING. Actually, worse than nothing,” Newsom wrote to his followers on X. “Machines that could stop the flow of fentanyl across our border are now literally sitting in warehouses. Unused. Not installed. All thanks to the fine leadership of @SpeakerJohnson, going above and beyond the call of Donald Trump.”

Johnson’s blames California for current laws

Democrats allege that Republicans are obstructing bipartisan bills aimed at resolving border issues, a strategy intended to enhance Trump’s polling numbers against President Joe Biden as the November elections approach. In response to Newsom, Johnson referenced the Laken Riley Act and other legislative efforts to reduce undocumented migration. He further criticized the California Democrat for offering free healthcare to “everyone who seeks it.”

“Actually we’ve passed: HR 2, The Laken Riley Act, Bills to deter illegals from committing social security fraud, fleeing border patrol, or drunk driving. Much better than the Newsom approach of free health care, lodging & “sanctuary to all who seek it,” Johnson wrote.

Newsom brutal respond referring to the failed border bill

Newsom then slammed the speaker as a “fraud” for opposing Democrats proposal for $20 billion in funding for border security.

“Oops. You left out that whole part about how you blocked $20 billion in funding for things like: – 1,500 new border agents. – 4,300 asylum officers. – New cutting edge tech to detect and stop the flow of fentanyl. You’re a fraud,” Newsom concluded.
