Volunteers to come together for ServeFlo

What would happen if our entire community came together to ServeFlo? That question, and request, comes from Helping Florence Flourish.

A special week of service – ServeFLO 2017 – has been set for the week of June 17-24.

“Our vision is to ServeFlo so that our city will be unified and transformed,“ commented Chris Handley, team leader for Helping Florence Flourish.

The strategy is city wide volunteerism with special projects that volunteers can sign up to help with during the week of June 17-24. Churches, businesses and individuals will unite to help with and lead projects to visibly unify and bless Florence.

Florence Downtown Roll & Cycling Festival

Project leader: Janet Brand and Liz Moore

Project description: To teach safe cycling, promote newly renovated Florence downtown area and encourage family and community participation.

Project location: First Presbyterian Church, 700 Park Ave.

LifeChangers, week of June 18-23 (Please note: External volunteer registration and registration fee required.)

Project leader: Louanne Stewart

Project description: LifeChangers is a local mission week where youth who have completed 7th grade through adults work on homes of lower income families in our community.

Students and adults are divided into crews who work together for the entire week. Project starts Sunday night at 7 p.m. and ends Friday night by 8:30 p.m. Students work each day from 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Worship is held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. “Fun Stuff” is Monday – bowling; Tuesday – YMCA; Wednesday – skating. Housing is provided at Calvary Baptist Church for the week.

VBS in the Park, Mon,-Wed., June 19-21

Project leader: Patricia Whaley

Project description: Three consecutive evenings – June 19, 20 and 21, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. – of activities to encourage children and youth who live near the park. Small and large group activities including crafts, projects, music and sports will be used to encourage an appreciation for the gospel, as well as for the park and community. Some material from LifeWay’s Backyard Kids Club will be used with the 2017 theme of “Galactic Starveyors.” Not only will children be connected with each other, but also with ways to keep their park in great condition and how to join a local church.

Project times: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Red Cross Blood Drive, Thursday, June 22

Project times: 1-6 p.m.

Feeding Florence, Friday, June 23 Project leader: Adriane Reynolds of Central United Methodist.

Project description: Helping Florence Flourish and Feeding Children Everywhere are partnering together to package 50,000 healthy meals for hungry families in Florence. There will be great music, good fun and a volunteer experience like no other.

Project times: Noon-1 p.m.

Prayer Walk/Drive Saturday, June 24 Project leader: Anne Chapman

Project description: In our society, there are seven main battlefields. It is in these that the culture will be won or lost for Jesus Christ. They are: business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family and religion. From the Amphitheater, we will prayer walk/drive through downtown Florence, stopping to pray at 7 buildings that represent the battlefields.

Project times: 8:30 a,m,-10:30 p,m,

Lighthouse Ministries, Saturday, June 24

Project leader: V. Brown

Project description: General cleaning of parking lot around the office building. Clear parking lot in the back, on the side and in front of both buildings. Need to rake, cut grass, cut weeds and trim bushes, pick up trimmings and trash. Clean parking lot from leaves and trash. A truck is needed to haul off limbs.

Project times: 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Briggs Elementary, Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Ed Love

Project description: Beautification of the Briggs Elementary School grounds, including, but not limited to: painting, yard work and landscaping. Project times: 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Williams Middle School, Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Jimmie Deas

Project description: Repair steps of mobile units. Put in place step pads between mobile unit in low areas where water stands when it rains.

Project times: 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Community Shelter Prayer Garden – Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Bryan Braddock

Project description: To create a prayer garden at the Courtney McGinnis Graham Community Shelter. This would include a cross, pathway, benches and landscaping. The purpose is to create a place of spiritual reflection for homeless men and women seeking guidance, faith, hope and love during the difficult time in their life. It would also serve as a venue for outdoor Bible studies, worship services and other events.

Project times: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Shelves at Sisters for the Future Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Bo Myers

Project description: Build shelves in a room at Sisters for the Future to be used to store canned goods for families supported by this program.

Project times: 9 a.m.-noon

Run for Hope 5K Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Pee Dee Realtor Association and House of Hope

Project description: A 5K run/walk to benefit The Courtney McGinnis Graham Community Shelter. Volunteers needed to help with the race. Runners/walkers needed to participate ($30 registration fee). Runners/ walkers register at http://

Lunch With A Child (Boys & Girls Club) Saturday, June 24

Project leader: Ellen Pearson

Project description: Tour our community’s Boys and Girls Club and have lunch with a child. You are welcome to bring your children as well. The club serves over 750 children a day in the Pee Dee and 300 in our Florence location.

Project times: 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.

Hygiene Bag Handout and Serve Breakfast. Sunday, June 25

Project leader: Bo Myers

Project description: To bless the homeless and needy community by providing practical hygiene products. This event will include breakfast and a church service. 7 a.m. serve hot breakfast; 8 a.m. worship and church service. Volunteers are needed to hand out hygiene bags and serve breakfast. Musicians are needed for worship
