Trinity Baptist to install new minister
THE REV. DR. CALVIN E. ROBINSON TO BE INSTALLED AS PASTOR AT TRINITY

Historic Trinity Baptist Church in Florence will celebrate the installation of its new minister with a series of events this month. Dr. Calvin E. Robinson Jr. will be officially installed as the spiritual leader of Trinity Baptist Church during a service on Sunday, July 26, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary at 124 W. Darlington St. He succeeds Dr. William P. Diggs who served the congregation for 50 years. There will be a ticketed banquet on July 25 in honor of Dr. Robinson’s installation. It will begin at 5 p.m. at the Florence Civic Center.

A gospel concert featuring area choirs was held in his honor on the evening of July 19 at the church. “We are blessed to have Pastor Robinson return home to South Carolina to serve our congregation,” said Deacon Alonzo Davis. “Trinity has a tradition of active participation in the spiritual and civic life of our community. Pastor Robinson brings an impressive record of strong community leadership therefore, we have great faith that he will help us carry on that tradition with distinction as we continue the legacy of the historic Trinity Baptist Church.”

Dr. Robinson is a native of Pamplico. He attended South Carolina State College where he earned a bachelor of arts in political science with a minor in aerospace studies and is a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Air Force ROTC. Pastor Robinson is a proud veteran of the USAF. He earned the master of arts degree in procurement and acquisitions management from Webster University and has an earned Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Pastor Robinson has also done further study at Yale Divinity School. Pastor Robinson has been in the ministry for about 15 years. After 10 years in the U.S. Air Force – his last assignment was at the Pentagon in 1991 – he worked in civilian life for another 10 years before hearing the call to ministry. He comes to Trinity Baptist from Milford, Conn, where he served a church for seven years. His first pastorate was in Virginia where he served about six years. He has been away from Florence County for about 32 years.

Following in the footsteps of the Rev. Diggs and others who have served this church established in 1868 is a huge honor for him, said Dr. Robinson. “It is humbling to follow someone who has done so much and means so much to the community and state, someone who is loved and admired by so many. It makes me thankful to God for allowing me the opportunity and thankful to the people who see some quality in me to allow me to take on this mantle at Trinity Baptist Church,” he commented. “It is a joy to be here,” he continued. “This is such a great church. The people are eager to serve this community and I truly believe will continue to build on the legacy established here almost a century and a half ago.” Dr. Robinson said Trinity Baptist wants to make an impact on the community in a holistic way.

“We want to use our campus to help young people, encouraging them in education and life goals. Our upcoming plans are to implement a STEM, (Science, Technology, Energy and Math) program which will be open to the community. We also want to emphasize evangelism in our community and abroad.” Dr. Robinson’s ministerial travels have taken him across the United States, to the Caribbean, and the continent of Africa. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, he presented a workshop on marriage and how to make a house a home.

During a mission trip to Nairobi, Kenya, he preached a revival, ministered on the streets and visited schools to share the love of Jesus. While there he developed a relationship with the African Christians and plans to return. He also plans to invite them to visit his congregation at Trinity Baptist. Pastor Robinson and his wife, Ann, have three adult children: Avril, Angel, and Calvin III.
