Downtown Darlington comes alive with beach music concert June 10

The Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association (DDRA) brings downtown alive Friday night, June 10, with a free concert from The Recollections Band.
The free admission event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 10 at the Liberty Lane Walk of Fame on Pearl Street half a block from the Public Square. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Sweet Jane’s Cafe & Wine Bar, Mama Mia’s Italian Kitchen, Kona Ice, Pepsi, and Crown Beverages.
The Recollections Band plays throughout the Southeast. The band's acclaimed variety performance includes the biggest hits from Motown, Disco, Funk, Dance, Top 40 favorites as well as contemporary tunes, line dances and special requests. Bass player is also a noted standup comedian and will maintain a hilarious repartee with the crowd as the event progresses.
The seven-piece group of experienced and talented musicians shares a common love of playing the classic Beach and R&B music that embraces the carefree beach lifestyle of the Carolinas. Members include founder Cecil Ridgill, Andy Locklair, Oneida Martin, David Shoemaker, Don Smith, Greg Purvis and Bob King.
The Recollections Band will stir your memories of the beach and the good times both past and present with its traditional beach band configuration of drums, bass guitar, lead guitar, multiple keyboards, trumpet and saxophone.
The free concert is patterned after downtown Florence’s successful Florence After Five to encourage residents to visit downtown and promote a positive image of the town.
“The DDRA is excited to provide these concerts for the community,” says DDRA Director Lisa Chalian-Rock. “It is something the board and many residents have wanted to see for a long time. We are trying a couple nights to test the waters for a longer concert series in 2017.”
Partners for the June 10 event include Cumulus Broadcasting, Community Broadcasters, Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd, Raceway Ford of Darlington, Dedicated Community Bank, Kilgo Law Firm, and the City of Darlington.
“We also want to extend a big thank you to the Darlington Lions Club, which will be helping us throughout our 2016 concerts,” says Rock.
In the fall, on Friday, October 7, Jim Quick and the Coastline Band will perform at the DDRA’s revival of the Yam Jam to kick off festivities for the S.C. Sweet Potato Festival in Darlington. This ticketed event ($10) will be held at Palmetto Office Furniture, 308 S. Main St.
