Camp Pee Dee Pride campers surprised with back to school shopping trip

on Wednesday, 08 August 2018. Posted in Good life, Education, Local News

Academy Sports + Outdoors made back to school shopping a little easier for 30 kids from Camp Pee Dee with its annual back to school shopping spree. Each child received a $100 Academy gift card to use towards athletic apparel, backpacks, footwear and other school necessities during the donation. This is Academy Sports + Outdoors’ ninth year doing this program and it has grown to include over 100 similar events, benefitting over 3,000 kids throughout the Southeast and Midwest U.S. This was the first year that Camp Pee Dee Pride campers were given this shopping opportunity.

As part of the event, campers were each assigned an employee of the store to help direct them around and find the items that they needed. According to Monique, an employee of Academy Sports + Outdoors, “All employees that came in for this event were volunteering”.

Captain Wayne Howard of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and main director of Camp Pee Dee Pride was excited and grateful for the contributions of Academy Sports + Outdoors. He was happy that the kids were able to get this opportunity.

Al Bishop, store director of the Florence Academy Sports, was also excited to be able to present this opportunity to the campers of Camp Pee Dee Pride. Bishop said that he had worked with Captain Wayne Howard in the past by providing a shopping experience for veterans through the Wounded Warriors organization. This year he contacted Captain Howard and asked if he knew of any children in need of a back to school shopping trip. Due to Howard’s involvement in Camp Pee Dee Pride, he was able to set some of the campers up with Bishop at Academy Sports.

Mona Lisa Andrews, board member of Florence District 2, was in attendance and volunteering at this event. She helped campers shop for back to school items along with helping Captain Howard keep the event organized.

Sheriff Kenney Boone of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said he “knows how much this shopping trips means to so many of these kids.” He mentioned how fortunate they were to be able to allow as many campers from their camp to participate.
