Savannah Grove Elementary hosts EPIC computer science event
Students showcase compter science skills
Students at Savannah Grove Elementary put their coding and computer skills on display Feb. 26 as part of the school’s Epic Build Showcase.
Savannah Grove joined the Code To The Future - Computer Science Immersion Program in January 2018. The program gives students the opportunity to learn fundamentals of computer coding by engaging in a structured curriculum that allows for at least 30 minutes of computer science lessons and activities per instructional day in addition to their regular instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, music and physical education.
Students learned how to code through the use of LEGOs, LEGO WeDo kits, and a program called SCRATCH.
Savannah Grove Elementary School STEM teacher and coach Haley Taylor said coding and computer science can carry over and can be beneficial to strengthening math and writing skills.
During the showcase, the evidence of what the students had learned could be seen in how they controlled robots via laptop computers using programs they coded themselves.
