Belle Baruch topic of program to be held at Florence Library

Dr. Lynn Hanson of Francis Marion University will present “The Wealth of Information Inside Belle Baruch’s Checkbooks, 1940 - 1961” at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

Belle Wilcox Baruch was the eldest daughter of Bernard Baruch, the wealthy Wall Street mogul of finance, known as the “park bench statesman” who advised six presidents. Documents removed from Ms. Baruch’s basement in May 2016, particularly her cancelled checks and check stubs, reveal new information about her life: her cares, accomplishments, and volunteer work, her pastimes, travels, and friendships, and her notable philanthropy, which included recipients in Florence. With the details of almost 7,000 transactions, scholars and the public can now identify her patterns of spending, generate insights into Belle Baruch’s life and character, verify events in her life, compare the impact of her wealth on South Carolina and New York economies, and illuminate the lives of those who lived and worked in her American sphere during the early 20th century.

Dr. Hanson was recently named co-director of the new Belle W. Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies at Hobcaw Barony. The new institute was created late last year through a partnership that included FMU, Coastal Carolina University, and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation.

Sponsored by Friends of Florence County Library and presented by Francis Marion University, this event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. For more information, visit www. or call (843) 413-7074.
