Columbia City Ballet produces a fairy tale ballet for all ages
Something magical is coming to Florence! The Columbia City Ballet is proud to present a sparkling version of the greatest fairy tale ballet of all time, The Sleeping Beauty. Staged an choreographed by Columbia City Ballet Artistic Director William Starrett, The Sleeping Beauty will dazzle children and adults alike on March 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the FMU Performing Arts Center. The performance will feature 40 local children from the School of Dance Arts here in Florence.
First staged 128 years ago, The Sleeping Beauty has become one of the world’s most popular ballets. The Sleeping Beauty is adapted from the 1697 Charles Perrault tale, “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.” The musical score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is adored, even being used in the Disney version of the fairy tale. Choreographed by Marius Petipa, the challenging choreography is as demanding as it is beautiful. The Rose Adagio, performed by the princess in Act I is considered one of the most difficult adagios in all of ballet. This production of The Sleeping Beauty pays tribute to Petipa’s 201st birthday.
The Sleeping Beauty is Tchaikovsky’s longest ballet. Originally, with intermissions, the ballet was nearly four hours in length. Ballet companies around the world, including Columbia City Ballet, generally edit the score. William Starrett’s staging is approximately 2 hours, with two, fifteen-minute intermissions.
This classic ballet continues to enjoy immense popularity years after its Russian premier and 81 years after its United States debut. The incomparable artistic and production standards of Columbia City Ballet make this a production worthy of the term legendary.
The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet for companies who wish to display the virtuosity and strength of their dancers. Just the names of the roles: Aurora, Bluebird and Lilac Fairy evoke memories of exacting technical requirements and accomplishment for dancers the world over.
Awaken your slumber with this captivating, enchanting spectacle of happiness and glamour. Princess Aurora and her Prince are sure to mesmerize in Columbia City Ballet’s stellar production of this timeless classic.
