Community center opens
The City of Florence held an open house at the new Dr. Iola Jones Park Community Center on Feb. 11. The new center is located within Iola Jones Park at 800 Oakland Avenue.
As part of $15 million designated by city council for recreation projects and improvements, funding was made available for the construction of a new community center. The building is 4,480-square feet and includes a large youth and senior adult activity space, youth lounge, computer room, multi-use kitchen, office space, restrooms and storage space.
The Dr. Iola Jones Community Center also has an 800-square-foot area connected by a covered walkway to the community center, which will be utilized as a boxing space for an established youth and young adult boxing program. Other improvements include construction of additional parking, rerouting a portion and resurfacing of the entire asphalt trail; and repairing, sealing and striping the existing parking lot and basketball courts.
According to the press release, city officials said the new space will be a welcome addition for the City’s youth and senior adult programming efforts.
