STOKES GAS & GROCERY – This 1940 photo shows Mae Houser Stokes and her daughter Margie Stokes (Morris) age 2 or 3 inside their store on Hwy. 76 and Ebenezer Road. Margie’s dad, George W. Stokes, owned the store and also worked for the A.C.L. Railroad. A sign in the store lists Atlantic burgers at 15 cents and beer at 20 cents. The building later housed the Dog House, where teens in the 1950s went to dance (The Shag). Margie grew up to be Miss Florence, South Carolina Maid of Tobacco in 1956, and Yam Queen of the Carolinas. She is married to George Morris and the couple has been inducted into several Halls of Fame for dancers and shaggers.
