DO YOU REMEMBER?
U.S.O. CENTER – The former J.L. Barringer House on the 100-block of S. Irby Street, circa. 1917, served as the U.S.O. Center during World War II for local Army Air Field soldiers, 1943-45. The property was sold to the Gasque family who lived in the house and opened the Gasque Hotel (late 1940s) with rooms in a two-story structure next door. The VA office was located in the main house and included a medical clinic with Dr. Cousar as the physician. The VA office closed in the early 1950s. The house and two-story building were later demolished and became a parking lot for Central United Methodist Church on the corner next door.
