DO YOU REMEMBER?

BIRD SUPPLY STORE and Shell Gas Stop on 301 South is pictured in this early 1950s photo. The general mercantile store was owned and operated by James Lewis Bird. He also was a dealer for Mercury Motors and Century boats and would drive to Florida to fine tune Mercury racing boats. The man seen on the right is Mr. Bird’s father, Leonard Bird. In later years, the store was leased and called McDonalds. The buildings are gone, but were located in the field in front of South Florence High.
