Flags to be placed at National Cemetery on Saturday
Florence National Cemetery Flag Placement Day will be held on Saturday, May 28, at the Committal Shelter at 9:30 a.m. This Annual Flag Placement is fondly known as “Scouts Day.” Master of Ceremony and program coordinator is Robert “Jay” Holcombe, Unit Commander, Boy Scouts of America Pee Dee Area Council.
Each Memorial Day weekend, the children of the Pee Dee and their families, come together to pay tribute to the soldiers resting at the Florence National Cemetery. These volunteers take part in placing over 12,000 flags on every gravesite in the cemetery. Each flag placement reminds us of the sacrifices made by each member of our Armed Forces.
The sight is spectacular to see. A post placement party follows at the historic site. There will be refreshments and a special appearance of costumed characters from the Star Wars 501st legion. The public is encouraged to join in honoring our veterans who deserve appreciation for all they do. Parking is available in the SC Dept. of Disabilities & Special Needs, 714 National Cemetery Road.
