KFB awards grants to five FSD1 schools

on Tuesday, 30 August 2016. Posted in News, Education, Local News

Keep Florence Beautiful (KFB) has announced the recipients of the 2016-17 KFB Education Initiative Recycling Grant. The schools that will benefit from the grant award this year are Moore Intermediate, Lester Elementary, Sneed Middle, Savannah Grove Elementary, and South Florence High. Grant funds may be used to purchase roll carts, deskside bins, bottle containers, and recycling service for the current school year. Bonnie Calkins with KFB said, “I am pleased and excited to be awarding grant monies to five Florence County schools.

I’m hoping in time that all Florence County schools will be on a recycling program and will have the Green Steps School designation. The children must help us preserve the Earth for future generations.” Sydney Sprenger, West Florence High School freshman and former Sneed Middle School Recycling Club President wrote the grant for Sneed’s well-established program because she “saw how much time it took for fundraising and how much Sneed needed it.”

She hopes to help West Florence begin a program in the future so she can continue to “make the world better.” The Recycling Grant is a competitive grant program that allocates grant funds to five schools in Florence County each year. Schools may only receive the grant twice, must have a plan for self-sustainability and reapply in order to receive the second year of funding.

Project leaders must also be willing to take the steps necessary to become a SC Green Steps School. “By exposing students to environmentally responsible practices at school, we are able to educate a large portion of the community. The kids take home the sustainability message they receive at school and share it with their families,” said Michelle Bailey, Director of Keep Florence Beautiful.
