on Tuesday, 17 September 2019. Posted in News, Local News, Sports

Sophomore forward Alvaro Zamora scored the match’s only goal with 2:07 remaining in the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a stunning 1-0 victory over Queens University of Charlotte, Saturday in non-conference men’s soccer action.

Francis Marion improves to 2-0-0 on the young season. Queens entered the match unbeaten at 2-0-0 and was among the other schools receiving votes in this week’s NCAA Division II Top 25 poll.

FMU will play host to Belmont Abbey College Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Zamora used a cross by sophomore midfielder Sam Pollard to tally the winning score at the 107:53 mark. It was the Spanish international’s first goal as a Patriot.

Francis Marion outshot Queens 20-11 and held a narrow 9-8 advantage in corner kicks. Both squads had one shot apiece in each of the two overtime periods.

FMU junior goalkeeper Maximiliano Rocco extended his scoreless minutes streak to 197:53 to start his Patriot career. He blanked Coker University 5-0 in the team’s opener. On Saturday, he turned aside five Queens’ shots.

Royals’ goalkeeper Sebastian Kalk registered six saves.

Lady Pats win 3-0

Juniors Dayle McEwen and Emma Hall and senior Carli Gauthier all connected for goals in a 3-0 victory against Coker University, Saturday in non-conference play.

The win, FMU’s sixth all-time against the Cobras in as many meetings, brings the Patriots to a 2-1 start on their 2019 season.

The Patriots were led in shots McEwen with four (3 on target) including a first-half score (39th minute) with a penalty kick. It was her second goal and first converted penalty kick of the season. She is a perfect 7-for-7 from the penalty spot for her career.

Hall’s goal came at the 57:10 mark with an assist from freshman teammate Bridgett Barrett. This is Hall’s first goal this season. Gauthier also registered her first goal of the season at the 86:02 mark.

Senior goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen registered her first start of the season and posted the shutout while making three saves. Sarah Swaim made seven stops in goal for Coker (0-4-0).
