Retirement too much for local counselor

on Wednesday, 01 April 2015. Posted in News, Local News, FEATURES

Jim Holder, LPC, is retiring from his retirement and re-opening a counseling practice in Florence. “I’m coming out of hibernation,” he quipped, explaining that he missed working with people. “I love doing therapy and helping people,” Holder commented, adding, “I absolutely missed it.” Holder is a licensed professional counselor and a licensed professional counselor supervisor. He is also a nationally certified Master Addiction Counselor, MAC. He offers all kinds of counseling, specializing in helping people overcome a negative memory or the memory of a traumatic experience.

“Most people don’t know that you can change a memory,” he said. His new practice opens in April in offices shared with Linda Davis at 2137 Hoffmeyer Road. He will be working part time. Before retirement, Holder worked with inpatients at McLeod Behaviorial Health for 17 years. He retired in September 2013. Holder authored “Perceptional Adjustment Therapy,” a teaching manual for professional counselors with a positive approach to addiction treatment, published in 1995. Recently, his book was translated into the Romanian language, along with three DVDs that he produced.

The DVDs are teaching tools that he produced between 2012 and 2014. The first one, “Brain and Health,” was designed for both professionals and individuals. The second, “The FACE Screening” is a tool to help professionals determine patients at extreme risk for addictions. His third DVD, “Sobriety Enhancement,” is also a teaching tool. All three DVDs come with a workbook. The Romanian translations stem from a trip to Romania last May where Holder spent two days training 60 psycho therapists in the Perceptional Adjustment Therapy and Adlerian Psychology for treating those suffering from addictions.

Seeing his book translated into the Romanian language is a treat he never imagined, Holder said. The book and DVDs went on sale in Romania in December. Holder has also been involved with ICASSI: the International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes which hosts conferences all over the world. It is a non-profit educational organization whose objective is to help professionals, students and lay persons learn the teachings of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. ICASSI was started by Rudolf Dreikurs, younger colleague of Alfred Adler in 1962. His desire was to spread the teachings of Adler, not only as a psychological method of treatment, but as a philosophy of life.

An MD, Adler was a young colleague of Sigmund Freud who developed a psychiatric and educational treatment and prevention approach that today would be called a strength-based and community-oriented psychology. Holder has served on the ICASSI faculty for five years. He plans to teach two courses during this year’s two-week summer conference in Dublin, Ireland, July 26-Aug.8. Approximately 25 countries participate in the summer conferences staffed by faculty from around 12 countries. Last November, Holder was elected to the ICASSI Board of Directors. “I was shocked that I was asked to serve on the board,” he commented. Holder is excited to return to his lifelong career of helping people through counseling. “I like to see the light come on when, all of a sudden, people understand themselves,” he said. You may reach Jim Holder at 665-6644 for appointments.
