Trinity Byrnes students build catapults
At Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School this spring, Ms. Bonnie Bosworth’s Honors Physics students were challenged to design and build a catapult capable of launching a melon 10 meters. This project would count as the final exam, so this was an extremely important undertaking for the students. Two three-person teams were successful in the mission. An all-boys’ team consisted of Ty McElveen, a senior from Darlington; Brian Maistros, a junior from Florence, and Tyler Howell, also a junior from Florence. They designed their catapult and built it without the use of power tools. The second team actually sent the cantaloupes further than 10 meters and their catapult included a release mechanism. The second team included Ashley Stokes, a senior from Hartsville; Erika Maliszewski, a junior from Florence; and Bryson Willis, also a junior from Florence.
