Whosoever Church opens doors overnight during cold spell

When the cold weather made an appearance last week, Whosoever Church opened its heart and its doors to homeless individuals. Although not set up as a shelter, the little church at 356 North Baroody Street that ministers to street people offers sanctuary from the extreme cold, said David Lucas, a volunteer manager. People sleep on church pews or on the floor in sleeping bags. An evening meal is provided in addition to a warm, dry space to escape the elements.

When temperatures dip below 40 degrees, the church opens its doors, he explained, adding that no one is forced to leave until the sun shows up and warms above the 40-degree mark. Some of the evening meals are prepared by church groups and individuals. Other meals, such as a hot soup, are prepared on the premises by a volunteer also seeking protection from the weather. Individuals, community and church groups donate food, blankets and warm clothing.

The House of Hope of the Pee Dee also shares some of its food with the little church with a big mission. Lucas listed some of the needs of the people seeking shelter, such as coats, hats, shoes, underwear, razors and deodorant for men and women. Blankets and pillow cases are also appreciated. As for meals, the most immediate needs are meats of all kind, sugar, cooking oil, dishwashing detergent, cups, plates and eating utensils. To sign up for an evening meal or to donate items, you may call David at 843-615-1282 or volunteer Felicia Stafford at 843-617-5224.
