Today’s young professionals crave influence over acknowledgment. They care more about finding meaning and fulfillment in their work than they do about titles, promotions, and raises. Even in Florence, Robert Watkins is forging his own path and making the community look and feel better.

When Robert Watkins was 17 or 18 years old, he was tired of the salons and barbers not understanding how he wanted his hair cut. This led him to fixing their mistakes. Soon after he decided to forego the salon experience altogether and started to cut his own hair. His friends started asking him where he got his haircut, eventually, he was soon cutting theirs too.

He started watching barbering videos on YouTube, getting wrapped up in the classic barbershop culture, and what was a necessity became a passion. Robert left Francis Marion University, where he was studying photography, to become an apprentice at a local barbershop. Upon receiving his license, Robert traveled all over Florence to cut hair at his client’s homes. After establishing his client base, he connected with a friend who had opened a cell phone repair shop, Robert set up a one-chair barbershop, and The Mailroom Barber Co. was born.

The Mailroom Barber Co. now has two locations, one in downtown Florence and the other in Greenville, with sights set to open more in the near future. But this is just act one; the story is far from over .

Once The Mailroom Barber Co. got started, Robert started to notice that the hair care products that were available weren’t living up to his professional expectations. Some of them were cheap, mass-produced grooming products that have questionable supply chains and damaging effects on the hair and skin. So Robert decided that he would make his own!

Robert wanted to make 100% ethically sourced ingredients and packaging, instead of contributing to the issues in the manufacturing industry. He wants him main goal for his customers to have healthy hair, a strong beard, and a confidence in their appearance.

All of Robert’s products are vegan friendly, cruelty free, and made with plant-based ingredients all made right here in Florence. The Mailroom product line has expanded to include multiple pomades, mustache wax, beard oils, and even candles.

Robert saw a needed and used his drive and ambition to fill it. The Mailroom Barber Co. exists to help people feel good about their hair, and by that extension, themselves.
