Beasley speaks at chamber's membership luncheon

David Beasley, the former governor of South Carolina and the present executive director of the Nobel Prize-winning World Food Program, spoke on the serious problem of hunger during his address as the keynote speaker at the 2021 Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce Membership Luncheon Sept. 9 at the Florence Center.

Beasley, a native and current resident of Darlington County, said the WFP has made great strides since he took leadership of the program in 2017, but insisted that hunger is still the world’s greatest problem.

He pointed out that 4.6 million people globally have died from COVID-related illnesses since the start of 2020. During that same time period, more than 9 million have died from hunger, with more than a third of those being children.

“Economically, there are trillions of dollars spent every year,” he said. That just one child would die of hunger is an absolute disgrace.

” Beasley said the WFP had reached and lifted around 90 percent of the world out of abject poverty. He said their focus is now on reaching  he other 10 percent.

“I need an additional $6 billion this year to reach the 41 million ... that are knocking on famine’s door,” said Beasley. “Let me tell you what will happen if I don’t reach those ... countries with that $6 billion. Yes, you’ll have starvation, mass starvation. You will have destabilization of nations. And you will have mass migration.

” At the conclusion of the luncheon Jim Brown was announced as the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Business Person of the Year.

Brown is a founding partner of Synergi Partners Inc. and EmployReward Solutions, both in downtown Florence.

“I am very lucky to have great partners,” said Brown said. “Florence is a special place. It is a great place to raise a family and to start a business. It means a lot to be recognized and have the business recognized.

” John Bankson, senior vice president and national director of closely held asset management for Wells Fargo and a member of the Florence Chamber board made the presentation.

The Business Person of the YearAward is sponsored by Wells Fargo.
