Florence receives public blessing
According to the ancient Christian tradition of blessing with water during the Feast of Epiphany, Father Athanasios C Haros, pastor of the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church of Florence blessed the Greater Florence area on Saturday morning, Jan. 9. The Blessing of Florence took place under the gazebo at The Palms Course on Oakdale Lake.
Included in the Blessing service, Oakdale Lake, whose water flows through the entire region, was blessed with Holy Water, and God’s grace invoked upon the Greater Florence area. Those attended were also be blessed with Holy Water. “As part of the Feast of Epiphany, the Church extends the Blessings of the Jordan River to all creation through water,” explained the Rev Haros.
“We blessed Oakdale Lake, and as the waters of Oakdale Lake wind their way through town, we will all receive the blessing.” Epiphany is the Feast which celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.
The Orthodox Christian Church, as a means of extending the blessing of God, each year celebrate blessing services with water, through which the blessings of God flow through our entire life. This is the first time the Church in Florence has extended the blessing to include the entire Florence region with a public service.
