Janis to join Play Me I’m Yours Florence

The Willcox Buyck & Williams Foundation announces that The Janis Project will become part of Play Me I’m Yours Florence 2016, April 15 – May 1. Artist Frank Hyder of Miami, Fla., created the inflatable sculpture in 2015. The huge air-filled head reflects Aztec, Olmec, Easter Island, and the Roman god Janus, whose backward-forward look gave the name January.

Frank Hyder has had solo exhibitions in museums around the world, including the Museum of American Art/Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Museum, the DiRosa Collection, and the Library of Congress. His awards include a Senior Fulbright Research Grant, U.S. Embassy Cultural Grants, and two National Endowment Grants.

When Hyder created The Janis Project, his large-scale inflatable sculpture travelled the entire coast of Europe from Istanbul to St. Petersburg. The sculpture’s name has been altered from the Roman god to a neutral gender, reflecting contemporary social norms, and the dual-colored faces celebrate mankind’s ethnic differences.

“Janis carries a message of equality and goodwill and dares to step out of the normal world of art museums or art galleries to be among the people; Play Me I’m Yours Florence 2016 is a welcome home for Janis, since their messages are shared. Florence’s street pianos and Janis will make us all consider, with a smile, issues that could divide us,” says artist Frank Hyder. Janis will be displayed spontaneously throughout Florence at the same time as the street pianos.
