Patriots stand 16th at season-opening golf event

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC – Junior Alessandro Caselli carded a pair of under-par rounds to lead five Francis Marion University golfers during the first day of the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course event on Kiawah Island.

The 54-hole tournament event is being played on the 7,115-yard, par-72 Ocean Course and is being hosted by the College of Charleston.  Tuesday’s third and final round will commence at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and the Patriots on holes 10, 11, and 12.

Caselli fired rounds of 70 and 71 to finish Monday at three-under-par 141 and tied for 14th place in the players’ standings.  His career-best finish was a 25th-place showing, and over his first two years as a Patriot he owned only four rounds of par or better.

FMU sophomore Lars Sandvoll is tied for 66th with a 75-75=150 scorecard.  Junior Callum McGuigan (77-79=156) is tied for 81st position in his first tournament as a Patriot, while junior Marc Casullo (83-75=158) and freshman Mark Goodall (78-80=158) are both tied for 86th place.

As a team, Francis Marion compiled back-to-back rounds of 300.

Middle Tennessee State University rallied over Monday’s second round to occupy the top spot in the team standings with a 20-under-par 556 score.  First-round leader Georgia State University slid Back to second place at 559, followed by the University of Mississippi (561) and Augusta University (561) tied for third and the host Cougars (564) round
