The Palmetto Pony Club had six members compete in the 2021 United States Pony Clubs National Championships held July 19-23 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Three of those members were from the Florence area. Each year the USPC offers championship competitions in seven disciplines: Dressage, eventing, show jumping, games, polocrosse, tetrathlon, and quiz (a non-riding, knowledge based competition). Members compete as part of a team and are judged on riding abilities as well as horse management skills. Palmetto Pony Club members from the Florence area competing in the championships were: • Mary Elwyne Kennedy, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kennedy of Florence qualified in the Modified Introductory Division of Show Jumping. She competed on her 16-year-old grey thoroughbred mare named Picturesque. She competed along side another Carolina region member on a scramble team with riders from the Great Lakes Region. Her team finished first overall and second in horse management. • Alex McAllister, 16, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin McAllister of Pamplico, qualified in the Standard Developing Horse and Rider Division of Show Jumping. She competed on her 16-year-old grey thoroughbred gelding named Certified Captain. She competed on a scramble team with riders from Carolina/Eastern Pennsylvania/Lake Shore/Tri State Regions. Her team placed first overall and third in horse management. She placed third in the individual equitation competition. • Belle Devault, 17, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip DeVault of Florence, qualified in the Modified Beginner Novice Division of Eventing. She competed on Bubbly Fun, a 12-year-old black and white Tobiano Paint mare owned by Katie Truesdale of Camden. She served as captain of her Carolina Region team. Her team placed first overall and first in horse management. Belle also finished 11th in the individual standings. To be eligible to qualify in a mounted division of the 2021 USPC Festival Championships, Pony Club members must hold a D3 certification or above and be at least 12 years of age as of January 1, 2021.
