Poynor ESL program gets S.C. highest ranking

on Wednesday, 13 January 2016. Posted in Education, Local News

The ESL program at Poynor Adult Education Center got the highest ranking for 2014/15. English as a Second Language (ESL) is an instructional program for students whose dominant language is not English. The purpose of the program is to increase the English language proficiency of eligible students so they can attain academic standards and achieve success in the classroom.

Tonya Creamer, Education Associate with the Office of Adult Education of the South Carolina Department of Education, congratulated Til Morisy, executive director at Poynor, in an email last week. She wrote, “I want to take a moment to offer my commendations on the strength of your ESL program.

An analysis of Civics grant recipients from 2014-2015, your program really shined. In a ranking which evaluates post-testing percentages (retention), performance, instructional effectiveness and the aggregate average (meeting performance measures), each recipient program is given a score ranging from 0-8 with 8 being the highest and indicating above average achievement.

Poynor was one of only four programs to achieve an 8 score out of the 32 recipients statewide. “This is remarkable and a testament to your leadership.”
