Darlington Raceway expecting near capacity crowd for Southern 500
For NASCAR fans, Labor Day weekend means only one thing – the Southern 500 at the legendary Darlington Raceway. Raceway officials are expecting a near capacity crowd for this weekend’s race festivities.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NASCAR is requiring masks for race weekend, but only for inside enclosed areas such as team haulers, the media center, restrooms, infield care center, race control and hospitality suites. In the stands, masks are optional. The Darlington Raceway Labor Day Race Weekend presented by the South Carolina Education Lottery will kick off with the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 Xfinity Series race Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
After the Xfinity race, the raceway will play host to a Night Playoffs Party at about 6:30 p.m. NBC Sports will host a NASCAR Playoffs Q&A at the party with broadcaster Rick Allen leading a panel featuring NBC Sports NASCAR analysts Jeff Burton, Steve Letarte, Brad Daugherty, Kyle Petty and Ricky Carmichael.
Fans will get the chance to answer historic track Too Tough To Tame trivia with exclusive, premium prizes.
In Darlington, the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association (DDRA) will offer a free concert Saturday from 7-10 p.m. on the Public Square featuring the Level 10 Band. The Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority will offer a free shuttle between the track area and downtown from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Darlington’s Grand Old Post Office will feature bluegrass music beginning at 4 p.m. The cost is $10 for non-members and $5 for students (kids are free).
On Sunday, the raceway will play host to a NASCAR Playoffs doubleheader. Up first up at 1:30 p.m. will be the second race in the Round of 10 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs, the In It To Win It 200.
The truck race will be followed by the main event, the 72nd running of the Southern 500 at 6 p.m. The big race marks the start of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.
All the races will be televised on FS1. The races will also air on MRN and its network of nationwide affiliates, in addition to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
