Aces second in USTA tourney
The Pee Dee Aces finished as runner-up in the Girls High School 18-U division at the 2019 USTA SC Junior Team Tennis Championships held July 12-14 in Camden. A total of 258 players and 36 teams from around the state participated in this year’s championship event.
The Aces are comprised of four area high schools players: Rebecca Liu (Wilson), Claire Nance (South Florence), Riley Gunter, Kennedy Horne, Grace Bailey (West Florence), and Mary Chellis Ellington (Trinity-Byrnes). John Nance, USPTA Tennis Professional and former Director of Tennis at The Country Club of South Carolina, serves as coach of the Aces.
In April, the Pee Dee Aces emerged as the champions out of the Junior Team Tennis League-Girls High School 18U division in Florence, which qualified them to advance to the state playoffs in Camden. During the three-day competition, each team played two full matches each day consisting of three singles and two doubles matches.
The goal of USTA Junior Team Tennis is to bring boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, to play tennis in a competitive and level-based environment. This community-based team event not only promotes athletic skills among tennis players but also social growth and life skills
