FMU Basketball: Patriots unable to cool down red-hot Bearcats
Francis Marion ran into a hot-shooting Lander team on Jan. 13 at Finis Horne Arena. Deon Berrien, Sidney Robinson, and Zane Rankin combined for 53 points to lead the Bearcats past the Patriots, 90-79.
The Patriots (1-2, 1-2) will play at North Georgia on Saturday. The return home on Wednesday to play USC Aiken.
Senior Holden Redparth logged another career night as he led the Patriots with 25 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He currently ranks No.5 in the Peach Belt Conference in scoring, and second in three-point field goals made per game.
Junior forward Langston Gaither turned in a 22-point and five rebound performance to lead FMU. He ranks No.2 in the PBC in scoring, and has notched at least 20 points in all three contests this season. Sophomore forward Darius Dawson had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Lander (4-3, 2-1) opened up the game with the first basket and got hot from three-point range quickly, taking an early 8-4 lead. Francis Marion immediately responded with a 6-0 run to give the Patriots their first lead of the game. Both teams battled back and forth before the Bearcats answered back with a 7-0 run to give Lander an 18-15 lead with 13:25 left. The Patriots battled back to get a 24-22 lead, but Lander got hot from three-point land and closed out the half on a 29-11 run to enter the locker room up 16 (51-35).
Despite a strong start to come out of the locker room, the Patriots couldn’t overcome the first-half deficit, while the Bearcats continued to connect with the long ball. Altogether, Lander shot 14-of-37 from beyond the arc.
Berrien led Lander with a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Women fall to No. 6 Lander
Sixth-ranked and unbeaten Lander used a strong defensive effort to capture a 79-35 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion on Jan. 13.
Freshman guard Aniyah Oliver led FMU (0-4, 0-3) with nine points, while junior guard Jasmyne May scored seven and freshman guard Ravyn Madaris six.
Zamiya Passmore paced a balanced Lander (5-0, 3-0) attack with 22 points.
