Community very responsive to drug take back
I would like to take a moment to thank the Florence community for its overwhelming response to the recent drug take back event. Nearly 150 pounds of unused and expired prescription medicine was collected from the four Florence County drop off sites. It is most gratifying to be part of a community that is so responsive to issues that threaten the health and safety of its members.
As I mentioned in a recent column, the misuse and illicit use of unused and expired medication is a silent epidemic in our community and Florence has proven its willingness to be part of the solution. This effort was so successful that local law enforcement agencies and health care providers are exploring the possibility of establishing a drop off location in the Florence City area that would be available during the week to drop off medications as needed.
This would give us a second site as such in that the Florence County Sheriff’s Office provides a drop-off bin in its lobby area during normal business hours. I would also like to thank the Florence County Coalition for Alcohol and other Drug Prevention, the Florence County Collaborative Council, Florence City Police Department. Florence County Sheriff Department and Lake City Police Department for their assistance and invaluable contributions to the success of this effort.
The local law enforcement agencies supporting this effort in particular, provided the equipment, staffing, collection and safe disposal of the collected prescription medicines. In fact, they also collected the medicine bottles, cleaned and recycled them. Our community is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of law enforcement agencies and officers who are always so willing to step up to protect and serve our citizens. Thank you again Florence for being such a responsive and caring community and I look forward to ways we can work together in the future to ensure the health and safety of all.
